MARKETING YOUR HORSE

pobar55

The number one and most important thing for you to do is to make your horse look his/her best.  Prospective buyers want to see a horse that has had good care, ie:  grooming, farrier care, nutrition, ect.  He must look show ready if you want to get a top price for him.  If it's winter and your horse is covered with pasture mud and his feet are in need of trimming, don't expect a buyer to  offer what you are asking.  If possible, have the horse in his stall, blanketed and clipped so when you take him out in front of the buyer and take off his blanket he's alert and looking good!

ADVERTISING

The number one expense when you are trying to sell your horse.  If you are relying on newspaper advertising to sell your horse, it's going to add up.  We have several methods to let people know about your horse and that he is for sale. When you place an ad in papers, keep it as short as possible.  Now that almost everyone has internet access you can use this to save money.  Example:  Arabian gelding.  8 yrs.  Won numerous championships.  See  www.exposureplus.com (click on equine) or call (your phone no.)  This short ad will catch their attention and peak their curosity enough to go to that address and if your webpage is attractive and has all the information they need, they will contact you.  It's not a "blind" lead like when someone comes to look at the horse expecting something they have conjured up in their mind and are disappointed when the actually see him.

People have asked me over the years "What's the best way to advertise my horse?" and I always tell them that ANY form of advertising is good.  Any means of getting the word out that you have a product for sale is great.

TELL EVERYONE!

Let everyone know you have a horse for sale.  Have flyers printed up with a GOOD picture of him and list his winnings, if any, and his ability and the extent of his training.  Give them to everyone.  They might not be looking but someone they know might be.  Post them at feed stores, on school grounds, you get the picture!  Put your website address on your business cards so people can acess your page.

REMEMBER.  THE INTERNET IS THE BEST TOOL THERE IS TO REACH A LARGE NUMBER OF PEOPLE TO ADVERTISE YOUR PRODUCT.  TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS MEDIA, IT'S CHEAP AND SOMETIMES FREE.
